So often I have clients ask me about what is the most important thing to focus on in business. Their name? Logo? Branding? Social media sites? What?
The number one thing that anyone in business needs to focus on is the green oxygen, the life of any business…MONEY. Yes, money. If you are not making money you are not in business. Plain. And. Simple.
Your product or service is important, your customer service is important, your accounting and all the legal stuff is important. However, the most important thing is the “S” word…SALES. Yes even if you hate it, you must suck it up buttercup and get good at selling. Selling your product or service is how you create the green oxygen that gives your business life.
Here is a tid bit of advice. When you start making money, don’t rest on your laurels. Don’t spend hours playing video games. Don’t go to the clubs on Saturday night. Roll up your sleeves and get working and keep working. Build more and more of your green oxygen supply. Have the reserves that are needed to grow.
But what about the other stuff? Those are important too. Do what you are great at and outsource the rest (even if outsourcing means to your spouse, kids, etc). Create an amazing business but never lose sight of the green oxygen that is the very breath of your business, the life that it breaths. Without it, you have nothing more than an expensive hobby.
As Kermit the Frog would say “It isn’t easy being green”, I would add that it isn’t easy creating green oxygen but when being an entrepreneur is in your blood, that’s your life source!
